ECHA consultation on PFAS restriction proposal – EUGINE contribution

02 October 2023

Engine Power Plants play a critical role in maintaining a steady energy supply in Europe. Unfortunately, their significance was overlooked in the Annex XV Report.

EUGINE urges the European Chemical Agency (ECHA) to consider granting a derogation specific to Engine Power Plants in the Energy Sector regarding per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). We propose extending the existing 13.5-year derogation on fluoropolymers, currently applicable to the Mining & Petroleum sector. This extension should cover critical components of engine power plants, including insulating gas in electrical equipment, battery energy storage systems, and spare parts.

EUGINE stresses the importance of these derogations to ensure a robust and uninterrupted energy infrastructure. Failing to provide these derogations not only jeopardizes energy supply in the European Union but also poses economic risks to Engine Power Plant stakeholders as well as impacts industries and consumers across Europe.
