Joint letter: Enabling renewable gases in buildings

13 May 2025

EUGINE has joined partners from accross the heating and energy value chain to call on the European Commission to include green contracts in its guidance for the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD).

Green contracts allow consumers to purchase renewable energy such as biomethane with certified proof of origin. These contracts are crucial in systems where renewable and non-renewable gases are chemically indistinguishable, as they provide a way to demonstrate compliance with the new EU rules on zero emission buildings.

As a fuel-flexible technology, micro-CHP plants driven by an engine are able to use different renewable gases, from biogas to hydrogen, and thus provide renewable power and heat all year long.
