European Net Zero Alliance (ENZA) Launched

ENZA, the European Net Zero Alliance, brings together 17 European associations in the energy, industry, buildings, mobility, forestry, and agriculture sectors. ENZA aims to bridge the gap between energy vectors and energy-consuming sectors to reach 2050 climate neutrality. It was successfully launched on the 30 March with an online event attended by 150 participants.
As a founding member of ENZA, EUGINE is convinced that only the combination of all energy...more >

Press Release: A Taxonomy that aligns sustainability with energy system needs

The Taxonomy delegated acts still fall short on recognising that a sustainable energy system, based on high shares of variable wind and solar energy, will need a considerable amount of flexible back-up solutions to ensure that the energy supply is stable and reliable.

Joint EUGINE EUTurbines Position Paper – Gas Markets Decarbonisation Package

EUGINE and EUTurbines, the gas power plants technology providers, welcome and support the European Commission’s initiative to prepare gas markets for the increased climate ambition of the European Union. A consistent EU-wide legal framework will be essential to drive the decarbonisation of European gas markets, namely by facilitating the emergence of a market for competitive renewable and low-carbon gases.
In February, the European Commission published a roadmap laying out its plans...more >

EUGINE comments on the review of the Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Directives

With the aim of helping the European Union reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030, the European Commission is currently preparing its “Fit for 55 package”, which should include amendments to the Energy Efficiency Directive (EED) and to the Renewable Energy Directive (RED).
EUGINE considers both directives to be essential instruments in the decarbonization of Europe. Engine power generation supports the energy efficiency and renewable targets by...more >

EUGINE Replies to the Consultation on the Revision of the Guidelines on State aid for Environmental protection and Energy 2014-2020 (EEAG)

State aid rules have a strong impact on the business case of environmentally friendly energy projects such as gas engines running on biogas or used for high-efficiency cogeneration (on-site combined heat and power production). EUGINE has therefore replied to the Consultation opened by the European Commission in view of revising the guidelines on energy and environmental protection.
In our reply and the background document submitted, we underline that the new state...more >

Cogeneration in 2050 – an Untapped Potential

Cogeneration or, as it is also called, combined heat and power (CHP), can help users achieve significant savings and is a cost-efficient solution to help Europe decarbonize, while also enhancing the reliability and flexibility of a renewables-based, highly electrified and integrated energy system. Those are the main takeaways of a study commissioned by COGEN Europe and 26 other partners including EUGINE.
Taking a use-case perspective, the study shows that...more >

EUGINE position on the Taxonomy draft delegated act

EUGINE believes that the suggested criteria for gas-based electricity and heat generation in the draft delegated act on climate change mitigation and the “do no significant harm” criterion under climate change adaptation fall short of being in line with the energy and climate policy and ambitions of the EU. It does not sufficiently take into account a decarbonisation path that leads to immediate cuts in GHG emissions in the short-term.

EU Hydrogen Strategy: A colour-blind approach is needed

In a letter sent to the European Commission, the Council and the Parliament, EUTurbines, together with a wide industry alliance, calls for a Hydrogen Strategy that is inclusive of all clean hydrogen pathways. The letter states that a technology-neutral approach is needed for a cost-efficient and cost-effective decarbonisation of the European economy. Additionally, the importance to develop a commercial market for clean hydrogen is stressed with a focus on the...more >

EUGINE and EUTurbines Joint Press Release: The Energy System Integration and Hydrogen Strategies: a missed opportunity?

The right intention but insufficient conclusions and actions. This is the summary of EUTurbines and EUGINE on the Energy System Integration Strategy presented today by the European Commission. While the Hydrogen Strategy has a more inclusive approach, the Energy System Integration Strategy missed out concentrating on electrification instead of enabling all sectors to find their specific best approach to decarbonise through optimised interactions of the electricity, gas and heat networks.

Engine power plants – keeping the lights on in COVID-19 times

Engine power plants often supply electricity and heat/cold to critical infrastructure such as hospitals, airports, data centres or industrial plants. Due to its compact size and installation behind closed doors, engine power plants are not very visible, but also during the crisis time of COVID-19 reliably ensured that power and/or heat was always available to those who helped to overcome the pandemic.

EUGINE/EUTurbines Position on Energy System Integration

In a joint position paper on energy system integration, EUGINE, together with EUTurbines, calls for a balanced decarbonisation approach supporting and reaping all the benefits from the uptake of renewable and decarbonised gases, such as the possibility of long-term and seasonal energy storage. Enhanced (cross-sectoral) interactions between climate-neutral gases, liquid fuels, heat/cold and electrons are needed and will result in a fit-for-purpose energy system.
The position paper further focuses on how...more >

Economic recovery: EUGINE and the gas sector support investments in sustainable European technologies

The undersigned organisations would like to express their strong support for the EU’s response to tackle the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. We urge EU institutions and national governments to continue to support the EU climate neutrality target in 2050 and fully support the recent call by thirteen EU climate and environment ministers to place the European Green Deal at the heart of the EU’s recovery plan. We strongly believe...more >
